I was going to give this three stars but then Bella made the dumbest decision I’ve ever encountered near the end so I couldn’t bring myself to do it lol this was still hilarious though

I always thought I was the kind of person who could resist the hype around something, no matter how big it got. No matter how much I saw that something everywhere. I did it with Colleen Hoover books, I did it with Stranger Things, and I did it most recently with Wednesday.

Yet somehow, some way, I got pulled into the hype of Twilight.

A stupid trashy vampire romance book that was SOMEHOW BASED ON MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE'S FIRST ALBUM??? THAT HURTS MY SOUL SO MUCH.

How this started is that my friends and I have a tradition of watching really stupid movies and shows together. Stuff like The Kissing Booth, or the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies. We were hanging out at the beginning of this month and we decided to watch Twilight.

It was really dumb. It was quite honestly horrifying.

And yet...

I ended up reading the book.

And I enjoyed it. I admit.

It's true that this book is unnecessarily long, like Wattpad fanfic-level long. It was full of unnecessary details that could have easily been cut out. The romance between Bella and Edward didn't even begin until at least halfway through.

But I am a girl who loves unnecessary details.

Somehow, reading page after page of Bella settling into Forks and navigating a new school and everyone's questionable reactions to her arrival was fun. Seeing her be a GENUINE TEENAGER was entertaining!! She was relatable. She hates gym, and she just always seems to be tired of everyone's crap, which sounds a lot like me. It was more entertaining than her stupid romance with Edward, or Edweird as I like to call him.

I really loved Charlie and Alice. They were my favorite characters in the whole book. Charlie is just this sweet dad trying to protect his daughter and relate to her and he is just SO NICE UGHHH HE DESERVED BETTER. And Alice was really sweet too, being so welcoming of Bella right from the start.

Okay, positivity time is over.

Now. EDWARD CULLEN.

Was he kind of hot? Yes, but only for a short amount of time. Probably because I was picturing him as his movie actor who is objectively very handsome. But Edward is a total creep.

I've always had issues with old, immortal characters who are trapped in the body of a teenager having a relationship with a mortal teenager. It always ends up becoming toxic or just plain weird. Take Alina and The Darkling from Shadow and Bone, for instance. Of course Bella and Edward's relationship is no different.

He treats her like a literal child. You could say he's being all sweet and loving and PrOtEcTiVe of his girl, but it's still very icky. He doesn't let her have a say in anything and basically sees her as a naïve little girl who can't make decisions without the help of someone older. The amount of child-related metaphors the author using in their interactions is disgusting. Not to mention Edward's stalkery behavior. Everything about this man is a walking, blinding bright red flag.

As for the plot of this book, it's pretty generic until about 3/4 in, where all the suspense and consequences of Bella and Edward being together comes into play. That was the most interesting point of the story plot-wise. The rest is meandering around and a cheesy, creepy romance. Again, I enjoy all the little details, but some people might not.

I would love to give this book a higher rating, but because of the toxic nature of the romance, I don't feel comfortable doing so. If you are reading this book for the first time or rereading it years later for the first time, I encourage you to think about its problematic elements.

Oh, and one more quick note, since I don't like to get too "political:" adding a REAL INDIGENOUS GROUP to your story and making them all WEREWOLVES is NOT OKAY AT ALL. Indigenous people don't exist for you to profit off of their cultures and traditions and make it into some fun thing for your story. What the author has done here is incredibly dehumanizing.

Okay I'm done now.

Words fail me.

I'd read enough criticism about the book beforehand so that there were no surprises. It was kind of cracktastic, in that way that keeps you turning the pages. But generally? Oh no no no no no no no no no. No.
