I think this is a great book for students to connect to. Kids want to know there are problems bigger than their own out there, and also to see their own problems being solved by kids their age. The paranormal/fantasy element draws in a lot of readers, because both children and adults like to escape into their reading. There is something about this story that draws you into it and I think a lot of middle school and high school students find themselves connecting to the love story of Edward and Bella.

ICONIC. but wow i can't believe she stretched this book out for so long. my friend (twilight lover) said all these books feel like they should be 45 pages long and she's right as always. but this was still fun and i do want to read the rest of the series!!! listened to the audio book w my mom and the narrator sucked so bad which might have made the experience worse. i hope she doesnt read the rest of the series or i might die. or take over for her.
anyways miss bella fell down so many times. she did a lot of things so many times (she's obsessed with edward's crooked smile) ALSO. my favorite detail: bella swan does not own a wallet. she keeps her money in a sock. i dont think this makes it into the movie but maybe im due for a rewatch and scan for money socks. and how did bella not know he was taking her to the prom at the end. she kind of makes me crazy but im obsessed with how stupid she is.

Ok--here's the situation with this one. The writing is deplorable. I laughed out loud several times (when I'm sure Meyer didn't intend the scene to be funny). There are plenty of cliches and awkward turns of phrase.

BUT! For the intended audience, this is a slam dunk. Meyer really captures the awkwardness of being a teenager, the headiness and obsessive nature of first love, and tortured high school anguish. And at times, this is just downright silly and fun. I was looking for a fun summer read, something simply entertaining, and on those merits, this definitely delivered. I'm planning on reading the whole series over the coming months.

Never thought I'd like a book about vampires, but this was captivating.

This book is awful. Edward is so manipulative and Bella just allows him to gaslight her. I don’t understand why this book was so popular.

I savored reading this again. A favorite! The destiny-bound romance, the gorgeous gorgeous vampire vegetarians, the wicked curveballs (ok yeah I know that's the movie), the Mormon allegories... this one's got something for everyone. Special interest, though, anyone?

The writing in this novel is poor. The character development is poor, and Bella has about as much depth as my big toe.

This is a "fluff" novel; I do enjoy reading it when I need something mindless and entertaining. Nothing more.

I'd give this 2.5 stars.

The good:
This book is a quick and easy read. It's also fairly entertaining (entertaining enough that I will read book #2), has a decent cover, and has some interesting minor characters.

The bad:
The writing was so bad. SO BAD. While reading this, I honestly felt like I was reading something that a high school student handed in for a creative writing assignment. It did not feel like something that was written by an adult, or something that was edited by an adult, or something that should be a finished product.

The main characters (Edward and Bella) are SHOCKINGLY unlikable.

Edward is controlling and has an incredibly bad temper. He also talks down to Bella a lot and often treats her like a child. He's supposed to be around 100 years old with the body of a 17 year old, but he acts like a bipolar 12 year old. Other than being handsome and mysterious, he has absolutely no redeeming qualities.

Bella is supposed to be mature for her age, but instead she acts like she's about 12 years old too. Other than smelling nice and being able to cook, she seems to have absolutely no redeeming qualities.

Edward and Bella never once had a normal conversation in this entire book. Nothing that either of them said ever struck me as something that was realistic or relatable. Their bad personalities and their bad conversations made it very difficult to like them, to like their relationship, or to understand what they saw in each other.

Their relationship was so unhealthy that it's actually pretty concerning that so many young girls are reading this. Their relationship basically went from openly hostile, to awkward/stalky (Edward sneaks into her house to watch her sleep), to "oh my god, we're so in love, I literally can't live without you," pretty quick. It reminded me of The Little Mermaid when Ariel cries, "Daddy, I love him!" about a guy who she's never even talked to.

The writing was incredibly redundant. Bella tripped and fell pretty much every page. Edward gave her a crooked smile pretty much every page. Edward laughed at her, usually mockingly, pretty much every page.
