This one takes a bit of warming up too. Kiedis is pretty self-absorbed and lacks introspection but the book rings true to what he probably felt (or feels like) during his life. It's also interesting to learn how the band was formed and changed etc, thinking that today I don't think it would've been possible for the RHCP to form the way it did back then. All in all, if you can get past the first couple of chapters I think you can appreciate the book.
I love listening to memoirs that are read by the subject but in this case, I was so bored at 15% through that I stopped. I made it to his 8th-grade year and all I learned about was his drug and sexual exploits detailed at each age and grade level. I listen to a lot of musician memoirs so am not bothered in the least by those stories yet I wondered, at this rate, how much more time was I going to have to invest to get to what I was interested in: his introduction to music, bandmates, his career, inspiration, and how he became healthy. The level of detail was unnecessary and I quickly lost interest.

If we weren’t in the middle of a pandemic, and if my library were open instead of doing curbside pickup for books, I would have abandoned this unfinished.
I think the RHCP are okay. All of their songs sound the same to me. Clearly I am missing something, because according to Anthony Kiedis, he’s an amazing poet and lyricist, not to mention quite the ladykiller.
I found Scar Tissue a bit too navel gazing, rambling, and self important for my taste.

His honesty and matter of fact language married to the insane life that Anthony has had give you a glimpse into the singer/songwriters life. It was tough at some points to get through but I appreciated his honesty especially with the relapses. I wonder what he thinks now of all his barely 20 gfs? definitely worth a read esp if you’re interested in addiction
Well we did it.... we finally finished. I didn't really like it and neither did Gordon, but the book gets some points for being a really honest and true recounting of a story that is hard to tell. The bad parts (which definitely outweigh the good) are that he's an ass and a predator, and even as he grows up those things don't change.
