I really, very highly, enjoyed this book. Murder mysteries are not normally my cup of tea because they very easily become thrillery. And I do not thriller at all. That was not the case with this book. There were twists and turns from start to finish. Just when you thought you had something figured out, it would twist again. I don’t know if it’s the island they’re on or what, but it was giving me “Lost” vibes. I really enjoyed it, I don’t find it at all predictable, and it kept me guessing through the whole thing.

Points for originality for sure.

Characters were a bit too one-dimensional and the delivery of facts was a little clunky, but that could just be the whodunnit style. Overlaid with the necessary post-apocalypse worldbuilding it was all just a bit much.

But overall enjoyable, well plotted, and wholly unique, from the premise to the use of Abi as a storyteller.

A delightful mystery. I loved the slow unraveling of the question in my head: “what even is this world?”

Emory is an incredible main character who is  inspiring, brave, smart, and full of sheer determination and will. I am so glad to have spent the time enjoying her story and seeing how she grew into herself throughout the book. There’s something so special about seeing someone start out a little ostracized and build back their credibility and eventually achieve a satisfying ending for herself and her people.

The world was so fascinating. I loved the island, loved every location on the island, and all the nuances of life in this harsh (but beautiful) location being such a part of the story as the characters work so hard to make their way through this world to achieve their goals. The island felt like just as much a character as the people you are following.

Abi perfectly straddled the lines of creepy, hopeful, and mysterious. The reveal and denouement of Abi’s story was perfect and fitting. And it created an emotional and touching final page.

One of my favorite books of the year and not for my usual reasons of “cool factor” but for the reason of just pure genuine good storytelling and captivating characters and plot.
