I had seen this movie a while back, and the book is quite different. Sagan's view of the near future was somewhat limited by writing the book in the 80s, which I am sure colored the movie adaptation. All in all, though, I appreciated his ideas on the intersection of religion and science.

Are we alone in the universe? Does it matter? I truly enjoy thinking about these and other similar questions which is why I’ve watched the movie Contact many, many, many times. The book doesn’t disappoint either. Carl Sagan really nerds-out on the details, which was good for me.

Fun fact. The new Euclid space telescope, tasked with creating a 3D mapping of 1/3 of the sky, has just released its first images. Check them out!

Another Fun Fact: There are approximately 100 billion stars in just our milky way galaxy.
That’s a massively large number. The distances between these stars is difficult to comprehend.

Another Funner Fact: There are hundreds of billions of galaxies. The distances between these galaxies is … well … a lot! (If you’re old enough, you can remember Carl Sagan explaining this on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.)

Read the book! Watch the movie! Think!

The story of first contact and humanity's inevitable reaction to the knowledge that they are not alone in the universe. Deeply imaginative storytelling, with a really strong message. Loved it.

I hate to say the movie was better. To be fair, it was somewhat better simply because you don't have the time to go into the amount of detail Sagan did. Soooo much could have been cut. The good thing, though, is that this book helped me sleep. :)

i loved this movie so much, i can't believe it's taken me until now to read the book! much more depth in the book, of course, and i loved how sagan put a lot of science and math "out there" without over explaining it.

DID NOT FINISH

Sigh... the movie was better. The science side is fascinating, but I'm not in the mood for what is, basically, a non fiction book. I want a riveting story about first contact, not a dissertation on science, astronomy, astrophysics, theology, world politics and bit of economy mixed with a very contrived attempt at a plot describing our heroine as a sexually liberated woman who is a genius.

Nonetheless it is an excellent book about the subjects listed above. The thing is, the attempt to make it fiction muddles things so much it ends up being a mess and non linear, so it's pretty confusing.

I would read this as a non-fiction book, although I think some of these themes would clash if they were all in the same book.
