I wish I had never read it so I could read it again for the first time
I liked the build up and the actual 'event'. The ending kind of waned. The book straddles between a non-fiction pseudo-lecture about space, society, culture and an actual fictional story. An interesting mix and style, but at times almost seemed like the main character was turning to face you to explain parts of the story, or science instead of talking to the other characters.
I’m honestly astounded, having been a fan of the movie for ages, that they completely inverted the role of faith and belief in text versus adaptation
I really wanted to like this book. I think there's a decent enjoyable story here buried deep somewhere, but the narrative style is waffley and boring.

The idea that patterns are contained in physical constants is terrific. Similar to Wolfram's work.

I really, really wanted to like this more than I actually did. The premise is right up my alley and its frigging Carl Sagan. It was just way too long winded for me. The first half of the book moved at a snail's pace and by the time it got moving I just really wanted to be done and essentially had to force myself into finishing it.
