This is a simply adorable story about a girl, her dog and a family full of love, joy, and goodness. There are bad guys who are just plain bad, and good people, and ridiculous people.
There are successes and failures, redemption arcs, and romance.
I picked this up to read because everything else on my to read pile was too serious, and it was the best decision I made today.  It's 2am now and I should probably sleep.

Feel good middle grade read

This is an adorable middle-reader book about a young girl and her dog trying to win a dog show. I'm not entirely sure the age bracket this book is aimed at, as the general concept feels too young for 10 - 12 year olds, but the length and convoluted plotlines are also a touch too tough for younger readers.

The characters in the story are all a little kooky, in the way characters often are in children's novels, but they're all grounded enough that they don't seem unbeliveable. There's a tender friendship between father and daughter, and the sibling relationship between Annie and Max doesn't involve any bullying or general teasing. I also suspect Annie might have been intended to be autistic, as she's described as being a bit odd and doesn't cry or laugh... except for two scenes at the end.

There's also an abrupt queer flavour to the end of the book, which was cute.

I'm not a reader of kid's books, so I don't know where this stands by and large, but it's still very sweet.

i didnt really know what to expect going into this, but every turn of the page pleasantly surprised me. it was a delightful, heart-felt, and unapologetically australian read. i really enjoyed going on this adventure with annie and runt, and i would be lying if this fictional pair didnt teach my 25 year old self a thing or two about the important of positive self-worth.
