This is a good one, clever, funny, sometimes moving, with a great sense of place. It took time to build suspense but ended up a pageturner.

Yeah, this one isn't as good as some of them. Too much bell-ness and I like bells but this got out of control.

I’ve read the Wimsey books out of order and this is the last one I’ve picked up, which worked out well. The previous books schooled me in how to enjoy Dorothy Sayers’ mysteries, which tend to slowly draw together the threads of the mystery with no real sense of urgency and a fair number of in depth detours about things like the ringing of church bells. It ends up being an enjoyable sojourn with an almost Dickensian epic sweep to the action in some parts. I’m sorry to not have any fresh Sayers mysteries to read, but I think the delightful character of Wimsey and the way Sayers focuses on how rather than who done it does make her books enjoyable rereads.

Enjoyed re-reading this: after all this time, did not remember many of the characters, though I did remember the murderer. Good crafting: am not sure I understand all the details about the bells in England, but it is a good education about bell ringing -- apparently an endurance sport in England.

A re-read.

Considered Sayer’s best - it Wimsey without Harriet and the whole thing is very focused on church bells and bell ringing and it all takes place in the English fens and there’s a lot about flooding. Overall a good escape.
