I wanted to like this book- I thought maybe it would be a younger, immigrant/hate crime All American Boys. But the voices were so inauthentic- they both sounded like a far-removed adult imagining the inner life of a kid. She lost me when the boy finishes a chapter with “It’s cool to think about stuff bigger than ourselves.” Just not realistic.

Middle school. GREAT book about racism since 9/11, with sympathetic adult characters and good family dynamics, bullying and good responses to it, community activism... Main characters southern white boy and girl of Asian Indian descent.

This was heartbreaking and beautiful. What a wonderful story about embracing yourself and standing up to hate for young adults. I think everyone should read this. #countmein

I love the message of this story and the strong voice Karina develops from her experiences. I wish the writing were more compelling, but I think 7th graders will enjoy this story!
**Second read with my 7th graders: It was definitely a good choice for their maturity level in talking about hate crimes.
