I’m glad I read this as a followup to Eva Luna before the context escaped me. It was a bit befuddling to jump around in time and place, but the same characters and similar themes grounded the reader. Absolutely loved El Benefactor’s Summer Palace getting swallowed by the jungle. Amazing imagery and wording, as is par for the course with Isabelle Allende. Great read.

Generally good vignettes, but they lack a lot of the layered appeal of her longer works.

A series of mesmerizing stories, it was a fabulous introduction to Allende and her masterful storytelling. Rich, diverse, and flawed characters, each story was vivid and compelling in my mind. Naturally j devoured it quickly, although this may deserve a second read through. Delightful, sensual book of short stories.

I wish I had read Eva Luna first, but I do love a short story collection. This collection was done fully and artistically, creating a feeling of the time and the diversity of South America. It was creepy and disturbing, not shying away from violence to the body, a people, and earth. But each of these motifs were used tactfully to create a general feeling of tragedy, frustration, anger, sadness, etc. Major trigger warning for the whole book. Walimai, The Road North, and Phantom Palace were likely my favorite for how they intertwine themes of migration, gender, and exploitation of native Land and Bodies.

A delightful collection of stories from the genius of Allende.
