This whole book is literally the “‘I love you’ ‘It’ll pass’” scene from Fleabag, but also academic.

This book was so fun, but also I feel called out a bit. Selin’s thought process was just so interesting yet sometimes complex to read, not that this was a hard to understand, just that Selin is both an extremely critical yet sensitive character. I loved the academic bits, especially when a character would just go on some yap session about some random topic, I just thought it made this book so much more charming!
The writing got repetitive for me at some points, and the humor is very dry!! I also definitely agree with Selin when so many characters would just show up around the end, it got kinda confusing. But those are just nitpicks,,
This book is definitely not for everyone, but if you’re looking for something slow, academic, with dry humor, yet extremely reflective, then I highly recommend.
Going to add Selin to characters I shouldn’t have related to as much as I did list!!

This one’s complicated. I keep writing and rewriting this. While reading, I thought that for all its intellectual effort to be a book about language and books, it never does what a good book should do: create a sympathy for the main character.
Once I finally hit the final lines, I’m realizing that perhaps the joke was on me. Language wise, it did what it set of out to do, but did it have to be so unpleasant the whole time?

I feel like this book did a better job than most of the feeling of starting at an Ivy from somewhere that is very different, but the actual execution made it kind of hard to follow at times. I ended up feeling like this was a book I was supposed to like (bc there was some relatable content in there) rather than a book I really loved or kept me turning pages.

I think I am the idiot because I read the entire book. The joke was on me
DNF at pg 255 because I honestly couldn’t. I wanted so badly to like this and to feel something when I read it. All I felt was frustrated. It feels pointless to mark this with spoilers but I guess it does contain them to some degree….but is there anything to really spoil if nothing really seems to happen in the entire book?
The main character is so uninteresting and whiny and pathetic in the worst way. It’s so hard to care about her and the things she does. Poor Harvard freshman that doesn’t have to work a day or have any real plight. The entire conflict seems to be that she likes a boy who doesn’t like her back. And she doesn’t really do anything about it but continue to let him lead her on in the laziest possible way. I can’t tell if the writing is terrible or if I just hate the main character and the plot….which maybe just makes the writing bad? I cannot fathom why someone would want to read this epic tale of mundane nothingness from the most ordinary point of view. I think the title was chosen because of the sheer number of times you say “this girl is an idiot” as you read the book as she looks a problem dead in the face with a blatant solution and says “oh dear what do I do.” I was an idiot for trying to read this.
