First time I’ve read it since middle school. Finished in a day. Love a good dystopian novel. Reflective is a great word to describe it. Excited to read the following novels!

I loved the first half of this book. It was unique and engaging. The second half fell flat for me. As soon as he was planning to run away I felt like it was very rushed. The fact that it was built up so well at first made it that more disappointing. I felt like the author could have done so much better. I felt a little confused as well because the way the escape was described felt muddied. I would like to read the sequel to see if it clears things up at all. However a book should not leave you feeling lacking.

This again, is one of those books I just have not read at all, ever. I never even knew what it was about, and I never saw the movie, however ridiculous that may sound. I must have had a really weird childhood of repeatedly reading Harry Potter non-stop. Anyways, the whole setting of the Giver is vaguely similar to the dystopian societies we are so used to right now, so it was kind of stepping into a deja-vu sort of situation. It's an interesting concept, and I guess I would have been more impressed if I hadn't already read the Hunger Games, Divergent, etc. The book was a super quick read, and I guess it did keep me on my toes. I liked several details about it: the family units, the "release", the black and white world. However, the ending was way too much of a cliffhanger. The Giver did a good job creating the inner society the main character inhabited-but I can't see any further than that. Guess I'll just have to read the next book in the installment.
