So many things to love about this one. I'm going with the puppy cannon as the highest of many highs.

4.5 stars

My favorite book of the whole series.

I'm very picky with proper romance books, especially historical romances. I've read a couple historical mystery novels with romance in them, and they have been like "oh this main female character appeals to you, the 20th/21st century woman. she doesn't believe in any of those silly social standards." Although Courtney Milan's characters are often feminist by their time's standards, it doesn't feel like they're trying to be so to appeal to now (and it feels like Milan's done her research regarding how far these characters are likely to go). It just feels like they're trying to be their best selves in a society that doesn't necessarily accept who that would be. Even Free, who is overtly feminist (though she wouldn't call herself that), feels like she just to be taken seriously by society, and she wants the other members of her gender to be taken seriously. I really liked this.

Used for Popsugar Prompt: a book with a main character in their 20s, a very silly prompt that is best dealt with as quickly as possible.

I love the series so much that I put this one off for a while for a few reasons; first, it's "adding on" to an existing series that was completed, and second, i feel like almost all Women's Rights romances are about a misogynist hero who Learns. I have got to trust Courtney Milan. She did a good billionaire romance, a good duke romance, a good rake romance, and now this--her hand at a hero who really is something of a "bad guy." But the thing about Edward I liked from the beginning that made him perfect was that he may be a scoundrel, but he's quite pleasant and likeable. He's also perfect for Free, and I can't say how much I loved this book.

In the interest of full disclosure, I chose to read this book amidst once very busy semester in grad school, plus work. Therefore I took a long time to finish this book.

I really wanted to like this book, no love it. Alas, I couldn't. Maybe because I had so many interruptions while reading it, but the truth is, I couldn't connect to any of the characters. It made more sense to me why Edwards was in love with Free, than the other way around, but even then I just didn't feel much connection or solid footing for these two to be so maddenly in love.

I still liked and appreciate, what Courtney did with this book. She brought some diversity into the romance genre and did it wonderfully by giving those characters and issues voices without stealing from the main plot.

So again, take my review with a grain of salt, and I invite you to read the book and form your own judgement. Hopefully, you'll love it ;)

I wanted so much to like this book I went back and forth between 2 and 3 stars. I should be in love with the H&h. The concept should be right up my alley. The characters say all the right things. The plot is pretty improbable but not more than hundreds of other Romance out there. It even have letter correspondence (and I usually love that!) And I'm a fan of Courtney Milan's writing.

But I just didn't feel the love. The H&h has zero chemistry. None of the characters jump off the page. The pace is uneven. The last third actually bewildered me. I don't where it went wrong but everything felt forced. It was like the book was something to be appreciated but not enjoyed.

Some parts are gold though. That's why my 2.5 stars was rounded up to 3.

So. Good.

Audiobook.

A little sad that the final, full-length book in this series is now consumed. I'm a litttttle disappointed with the steam, but it made me giddy in other moments (including the puppy canon letter). Courtney Milan, what a wonderful series. Thank you!

Feminism and a great romance read? Yes please. Another trope on its head, another delicious historical romance novel.

Surprisingly woke for a historical romance!
