Reading this novel gave me the same feeling I had when I watched Boogie Nights while recovering from a crippling stomach flu at 2 p.m. on a hot summer's day.

Not nice.

This book is terrifying and disgusting in a way no horror movie ever could be and I loved every minute of it. Dunn is a master, her characters are bizarre and deformed but what makes all of them monsters in the end is their overwhelming humanity. Definitely one I see myself regularly re-reading.

This was a dark tale about a circus family and all it's dysfunctional glory. While it was disturbing, it was impossible to put down. This book is for those who like stories of a bleak, dark nature. I enjoyed it very much.

I can’t rate this book; I appreciate it but I really didn’t like it. The writing is wonderful. The storyline is imaginative and has it all: family drama, murder, jealousy, betrayal, mystery, cults, lobotomies, carnival freaks, auto-amputations, sexual perversion. But in the end, there were no characters that I could connect with or root for. It was just too weird and disturbing for me. … and I’m left disappointed.
