I enjoyed this book. It's one of the classic "victorian novels", and I liked the language although it needs some getting used to and can feel lengthy at times. I was surprised of how feminist of a story it is with harsh criticism of the British patriarchic society and different types of men—especially given this book was published in 1848.
The narrative style is unusual with a fairly elaborate plot at the beginning which then turns out to be only the frame; most of the book is a flashback narrative before Anne Brontë brings the frame plot back to conclusion at the end.
I did find it a bit annoying at times how pietous of a person Helen is, returning for and caring for her husband when he had lost the privilege of any attention on her part multiple times over. Being such a selfless "saint" seemed unrealistic for any human being.
Speaking of end: I don't know how I felt about the conclusion of the story and the "happy ending".It seemed to me that Gilbert was just another man that "pestered" her with unwanted romantic advances, yet Helen comes around to him at the end.
