i do love a modern take on classic russian lit. confusingly homoerotic and very very sad.

I really enjoyed this coming-of-age story set in the Soviet Union in the 1980s. It's about two best friends who are girls, and the whole time you can tell there's this undercurrent of dark stuff happening, but the plot got very much darker about two-thirds of the way through and I decided I just can't finish it. The writing and characterization are very good. It just got too dark for me.

Wonderful debut novel about a group of friends coming of age during Perestroika. Truly heartbreaking.

I liked it! It was a bit slow in the middle but the end really picked up. I'd like to read Chekhov's "The Cherry Orchard" now to see how this compares.
