Gathering Blue

A page-turning, quick read about a dystopian society. Second part of the Giver Quartet (unrelated to the first novel) has a great premise, but ends too quickly at the end.

I like how Lois Lowry is able to show the society within the story. She also is very good at addressing heavier topics for younger readers to conceptualize. That being said, I felt like not much seemed to happen within the story itself. It felt more like a lot of set up without much payout. I'm hoping that the Messenger will maybe follow up with some of this.

Considering that "The Giver" is one of my absolute favorite books, I'm surprised it took me this long to read it's companion novel "Gathering Blue." You can definitely tell that it was written by the same author, Lowry has a great talent of creating an alternate reality - a dystopian society. However, I think this novel is inferior to "The Giver." It took me until I reached the last 50 pages until I even figured out how this book could be considered a companion to "The Giver." Then, the book ends rather abruptly, right when the heroine discovers her true journey and purpose, the story ends. SPOILER FOLLOWING. I want to see how Kira disrupts the community where she is "imprisoned." I want to see how she and her father interact now that they are reunited. I want to see her travel back to this land of the sick and see if Jonas and Gabriel are there. So as you can see, I was left wanting.

I liked this one better than The Giver. But it wasn't that good. The events of The Giver weren't even mentioned throughout the book

I didn't really get into this book until the end. The story was kind of meh until the last third, that's where it got really interesting.
