Jesus christ. The amount of times I thought 'oh' whilst reading this. I get why it's such a red flag of a book now.

so beautifully written...its almost hard not to get sucked in and transported into the world that murakami writes. There are definitely some parts of the book that I don't like--and I'm still on the fence about the way he writes naoko / midori / reiko, but the book overall felt like a dark, rainy april night. It's melancholic, lonely, and feels like a dull heart ache that never fully goes away.

I loved this, but
I was wondering from like halfway in the book if Midori was the girl who had deceived Reiko - she may have been, and I both like and hate the mystery of not knowing, as it leaves it to be ambiguous but also unsatisfying - maybe I overthought it

this book painted all female characters in a very sexual way. there were also a lot of rapey comments and very questionable situations painted as sex but clearly assault.
Reiko, the character who could be described as « motherly » tells her tragic backstory—a lesbian trap (sexual assault) set by a malicious THIRTEEN YEAR OLD girl. the worst part: she likes it. Or what about Midori (who doesn’t mind being sexualised) who is painted as radical, but randomly throws in comments such as what kind of underwear she’s wearing
I Decided this book was not worth it and am disgusted that I read as far as I did.
