This was a fun to read book that had me anxiously turning pages at times. Following the story of a family as they navigate dysfunctional relationships with each other, themselves and their world. Jonathan does an excellent job at dropping you into the mind of a character so believablely that you find your yourself swimming in their thoughts effortlessly as a fish would when placed into water.

That's it, I'm done with Franzen. I trudged through the dysfunctional lives of the people in "Freedom," and while this one was better, slightly more comical (in that dark way, of course), it is also another well-written tale of modern humans and their short-comings that I will not punish myself with. Franzen is obviously a good writer, but even after just 62 pages I was weary of the paragraph-long sentences and masochistic despair of the few characters introduced. At 568 pages, it is a long haul for such unlikable people. Read Harry Potter instead. Or Ann Patchett. Or Jeffrey Eugenides. At least there is some redemption within their stories and it doesn't come so late you don't give a shit any more.

Excellent and epic. Franzen masters the art of describing a family's struggles.
