Jonathan Franzen

Jonathan Franzen is my homeboy. His books rock my world. And as painful as so much of this book is to read, it's a fantastic book.

V well written and engaging book from start to finish. Points of discomfort (particularly in the representation of female characters), but suppose that is the point. Also interesting to read through a late capitalist lens. Also ITS LONG

I wasn't sure I was going to stick with it, since the beginning was a little slow, but I was glad I stuck with it. None of the characters are likeable and you experience a bit of schadenfreude while reading.

You are such a good writer. I feel that these narratives, all over the place, seem to encompass everything, for everyone. I imagine Franzen is writing all his experiences from every person he has met into a novel. It is easy to transpose your own family into the Lambert household, and the result is heartbreakingly accurate.

This is essentially a novel about mid-life crises in relation to one particular family. IT jumps around between the perspectives of each of the parents (dealing with old age, sickness and dissatisfying lives), the daughter (divorce, bisexuality and a dissatisfying life) and the 2 sons (depression, financial issues, career problems adn dissatisfying lives). Starting to notice a theme?

It wasn't great.

you'd think spending so much time with some of the most despicable and pathetic people ever imagined would get grating after a while, or at least feel like an empty exercise, but instead (along with being funny) i felt like i could understand the darker and grosser parts of humanity, of myself, of the people one loves. an ugly abyss still stares back.

Deep and encompassing.
