I read it, then recommended that the Cupertino Book Group read it. Ulrike didn't like it. Didn't believe people would act this way.

"A week after I'd given my mother the book, I came in and there she was, lying on the couch, reading it. I said, Oh Ma, how are you enjoying that book? She sat up, swung her legs over the side of the couch, narrowed her eyes, as always, but this time she said, It's as though she's just in the room with me. And then she said, I'm going to feel lonely when I finish this book."

(upon re-reading this review, I feel I should point out that the mother in question is NOT talking about [b:The Corrections|3805|The Corrections|Jonathan Franzen|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1355011305s/3805.jpg|941200].)

Sorry but I have to hang up the towel on this one. I just can't get into any of the characters and further more its deeply depressing. Not in the sense that there is a lot of death or tragedy but that these characters are such bad people. The kind of people you would never want to have lunch with so why would I want let them into my reading world for multiple days.

I suspect that the fact that I feel so strongly about the characters is a sign that the book is well written or at least the characters are well developed. But crime-in-italy, the thing made me want to stick a fork in my eye.

I'm done.

take this on vacation.

Don't read it for the story or social commentary of the despicable characters. This book excels with the quality of writing.

Didn't care for or about any of the characters and it irrationally infuriates me that there are characters called Enid and Eden, Jonah and Jonas.

I'm really late to the scene on this one, but it is brilliant, funny, and thoughtful. I'm going to read a lot more Franzen.

incredible. franzen captures what being a human and having relationships means better than any author i’ve ever read.

2nd time reading this. Fantastic book
