Moving too slow for me

in my defense, I did try. The book jacket made this seem like it was going to be a very interesting story that would grab your attention right from the beginning. Unfortunately, I did not find that to be the case. There was plenty of description, but not enough character development to entice me to read further. With numerous other books on my shelf, I felt like it was a waste of time to continue on something that did not hold my interest.

Unpleasant people making unpleasant decisions. No matter how well written, it was a slog. Honestly it reminded of that time in the nineties when I struggled thru some Phillip Roth book and ended up swearing off all male authors for about a year in reaction.

Look. I’m sorry, ok! Sometimes we just stumble across experiences that truly resonate within us and align with who we are, something that we were searching for our entire lives, even though we don’t realize it until the moment it appears before our eyes and unfolds its magic.  This is not about you, this is about me. There’s no way I could give this one less than 5 stars.
I hope one day you’ll understand.

The characterization and family dynamics are so quintessential to a Midwestern family. The way your perspective gets I to each character's head and really gets you to empathize just as they're explaining their awful decision is really incredible. There are so many parts I loved. It's only drawback is some of the plot beats that I felt were unnecessary, taking away from the core family dynamics. But ultimately, exceptional.
