first time reading Kathy reichs. didn't like it. lack of style, character development and forensic anthropology. more like any other investigative book. hate the one sentence paragraphs
This was a quick read! It didn't feel like a normal Tempe book though. It seemed rushed and quite simple and then the resolution sort of came out of nowhere.
I decided to read the Temperance Brennan books after watching the television show Bones. The two are similar but also very different, I enjoy both. Kathy Reichs has a very detailed but still interesting writing style. I do not understand all of the technical jargon but that does not detract from my reading enjoyment. Tempe and Ryan are great characters and my favorite parts of the books are when they are in a scene together especially if it is out in "the field".
I do enjoy a little light forensic anthropology to start the holiday
What I liked about this book was they referenced Tory from Virals. Virals was what first turned me onto this series and I love it when authors tie in books to their other books.
It was decent and interesting, but there was too much nascar... But pretty good book overall.
It has been some time since I have read a Dr Tempe Brennan novel and after reading this one I do not think I will be back. I enjoyed the earlier novels but drifted away from them after a while. To be honest I found the novel to be light, an outcome that was telegraphed and really did we need a history of NASCAR to pad out the word count?
The book was easy to read and did not require much thought and I knocked it over in a day and half.

A series I started pre-GR days which I loved, back then. I do find it a bit difficult to keep up with a series after 7 or so especially since it's usually around about then that the protagonist's relationship sours and falls apart. It took slightly longer for this series but I can see that there are 4-5 years gaps between reading the last 3 books. I didn't quite remember the whys and wherefores anymore so thought I'd give this series another go since I did quite enjoy the first few.
The mystery is set around NASCAR or rather the speedway but not particularly related to it. However, the info dump was a little mystifying to me as I'd basically have no knowledge about NASCAR nor much about cars (even if I drive a manual car). I'm thinking most of her readers may not know too much either as I don't think any of previous books come close to the speedway. Hence, the info dump. The mystery was quite engaging and rather good up to the point when the murderer character was introduced because I picked him up right off the bat.
Thankfully, her personal life didn't seem to be too intrusive in this instalment though she seems to roll her eyes quite often - and therefore, so did I lol. I don't remember much of secondary characters from previous books but I'm taking a liking to this Detective Slidell character despite his obnoxious behaviour (all play acting, it seems!). And a new interesting character which may or may not feature in the next book. So, I'll have to find out...
