Loved this book. Emotionally intense, but hopeful and moving.

This book broke me in every possible way. It is such a heavy book but it felt therapeutic at the same time. My heart broke so many times for our characters and I just wanted to console them. While they both did questionable things that they felt were justified it was hard to actually be mad at them for doing what they did. The author's note is so important! And I truly hold this book in a special place!

Reading This Close to Okay by Lessa Cross-Smith was the equivalent of going to therapy for me. This was a heavy read as it deals with topics such as death of a child and wife, suicide attempts, and depression. This is not an easy read at all, but I feel like I got so much more out of it because of that.

The story starts with Emmett sitting on the edge of the bridge, ready to jump off into the lake. Tallie, a therapist on her way home during a rainstorm, spots him and convinces him off the edge. Thus, their lives begin to entangle as they begin to heal from their individual pains.

I related a lot to Emmett’s way of thinking throughout the book surprising. I understood it and I had times where I believed to same things. I never wrote and mailed my family a goodbye letter though. This novel reminds me of the quote by Louis and Champagne: “There will always be a reason why you meet people. Either you need to change your life, or you’re the one that’ll change theirs”.

Both Tallie and Emmett were catalysts for each other. Cross-Smith did a beautiful job to capture the essence of grief and the aftermath of loss.

The main message I took away was that things happen to us regardless, it out responsibility to give those things meaning or let them go to serve our own development.
