Was super curious why this book was SO polarizing. This book lets its characters be complicated and fucked up and absolutely unwell, resulting in their lying and doing some ethically dubious things. And I for one am a-okay with that because they’re humans. It wasn’t a favorite book but it was compelling, and gave me a glimpse into other world views. The religious bits were outside my typical read but again felt spot on for the characters, so very reasonable. Worth the read, I think.
Story started off interesting and I was curious about how their individual stories would influence each other. Everything was good up until the Tallie took Emmett to the party. All scenes after did not really make sense to me and felt out of place in the story.

The book also oscillates between being unnecessary descriptive (cushions on chairs are described multiple times in great detail, for example) while other, more important parts of the story or background are glided over
