A fun read! Does more with gender expectations than the previous book, and also sets up the third book aggressively. Vasya is a character with strong feelings and emotions and I can't wait to see what happens.

Hi Morozko, and welcome to my harem of book boyfriends. You can settle in next to Anthony Lockwood and Shiro. Make friends please. You'll be here for a while <3

Seriously though...this book and it's predecessor were absolutely stunning. I was so enthralled with [b:The Bear and the Nightingale|25489134|The Bear and the Nightingale (The Winternight Trilogy, #1)|Katherine Arden|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1470731420s/25489134.jpg|45268929], and I'm happy to say that I was just as sucked in to this story. Katharine Arden knows how to transport her readers to another time and place, because for a good chunk of this book I swore I was in medieval Russia in the dead of winter. The atmosphere she created is one of the best I have read.

We meet up with Vasya and Co again, except this time we get a bit more backstory on Morozko and his role in Vasya's world. There are some great plot twists that I am really looking forward to learning more about in book 3 (because there is no way this series is ending in just book 2. I will pull out my hair if that is the case). Vasya has grown up a lot, but in some ways she is still very much a child and acts like such. I found this to be fairly refreshing as much as I did irritating. There were several times that the author pointed out things to the reader that Vasya had not picked up on, and I found this was a great way to keep us informed while still giving her character room to grow.

I am so excited for book 3, and I'm sad it's going to be a whole year ughhhh. In the meantime, it is snowing and cold here so I'm going to go outside and see if I can summon my own winter-king.

I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS!!! I have been dying to get my hands on it ever since finishing The Bear and the Nightingale 3 months ago 😁😁😁

I loved The Bear and the Nightingale, and I adored The Warm Hands of Ghosts. This book may just top them both. Vasya has grown more sure of herself, more independent, more determined to be free—come what may. At times she frustrated the daylights out of me, and at others, I was surprised by her quick wit and loyalty. She really feels like a living, breathing person that exists or did exist in some other time, flaws and all, and I love books that can make me think that. The political intrigue and religious zealotry form the perfect backdrop, suspenseful and dark in some places, tragic in others. The pacing is more balanced in this book than the first, though at rare times I still found it slow when compared to the nail-biting pace of the action scenes. I’ve never been much of a fan of magical realism, but Arden is making me begin to think I just hadn’t found the *right* magical realism. These books have so far been simply wonderful to read.
