Loved this one! The only thing that upset me was the death of Cody Hoyt. At times he really annoyed me but as soon as he’d died I realized just how much I’d grown to love his character. But I loved meeting his new partner and I’m excited to see where Box takes us on the next journey!

This book got me ~angry~ I’ve liked Box in the past but this book is just so misogynistic. I feel like the reader should be rooting for the girls Cody and Cassie are looking for but the writing goes out of it’s way to make it clear that Gracie is the good girl we should be rooting for and Danielle is a self-absorbed bitch who goes out of her way to get them kidnapped with her recklessness. The writing just shows a lot of seething contempt for girls/women who aren’t quiet bookish types which is not especially surprising since Box’s favorite derogatory name in this book is “derelict.”

This could have been great if it didn’t feel like CJ Box hates teenage girls each time we got the perspective shift to Gracie. They’re literally kidnapped in a bunker and stripped to their underwear but Gracie makes sure to point out her sister is in a *scoff* ridiculous red lacy thong. As if that’s something that would come to mind when kidnapped by a presumed serial killer?

I received a copy of this from the GoodReads FirstRead Giveaway.

This was the first book I have read by C.J Box and will not be the last. It is a book that I have to read some fluff in between picking up another though just to get the grime out of my head.
The book was full of vivid imagery and suspense. In the beginning we meet the good guys, the lizard king and the victims. I felt like the first part of the book was like a horror movie where I was yelling at the person on screen "No! Don't open that door!!" I won't want to drive on an empty highway anytime soon. The imagery was so vivid by later in the book where there were parts that were only eluded too you really knew exactly what happened. I also got the feeling like I was reading an episode of something like "Criminal Minds".
C.J Box does an excellent job at building the suspense and letting his readers get to know his characters. I found some content very disturbing because it does take a look through the eyes of the bad guys and victims, not just the good guys hunting the bad guys and trying to save the victims.

Dark content, complex action, not much mystery, but hard to put down.

So, I've read a few of the Joe Pickett books in C.J. Box's other series and liked them well enough. They're quick reads in busy times and easy to listen to while riding an exercise bike. I thought I'd try his other series as well. I didn't like the first one, but I thought I'd give the series another chance. Big mistake. I hated this book. It was gruesome. No more in this series. And if the Joe Pickett series turns as dark as this one, I'll stop those as well.
