What is it with horror authors and providing no comfort and instead ending at immediate resolution? Like, we don't even get to see the girls get home, just to the car. How is that satisfying? This is the third one I've read recently that finishes as soon as the immediate danger is over. It feels callous, to me, to be totally honest and these girls have dealt with enough callousness, seems cruel of the author to get in on it too. I would've rated this at three stars, not great, not terrible, but there were also just no original ideas here so it ended up not being much of anything.

This is a short-burst of the familiar cautionary tale: beware what lies within the woods! You can actually visit these trails — Pisgah National Forest — but you may not want to…
The pace of the story mimics the hike…it’s a slow-build of suspense as the MCs slug up the mountain. It’s here where tensions tighten as the girls’ friendship borders on fracturing, and the setting sprinkles in ominous clues, right down to the skeletal oak tree that seems to be pointing you back to the beginning — back to safety. There’s the dark forest canopy closing in, an empty tent curiously left at a campsite, footsteps heard within the midnight-hours mist, and trail markers that appear to have been tampered with, creating confusion.
Then the plot accelerates in it’s danger and gore, definitely more disturbing than I anticipated. I didn’t find the book to offer any new takes on this wilderness survival trope; it feels like many Netflix movies that play on the same fears. There’s little context or origin story, but if you are in the mood for a quick-shot night of terror and can suspend some disbelief along the way, this is a fun yet frightening little romp in the woods that gives lead to two female characters and highlights the bonds of friendship in the scariest of ways!
