This book reads like a low budget slasher film with unrelatable characters and unrealistic actions. We spend more than 50% of the book before anything remotely thrilling happens. Perhaps if the characters were interesting in any way it would warrant the extensive background information and introspective writing. Instead, it just feels like needless word vomit.

For such a short book the pacing was way off kilter. We spend so much time trying to build up the development of the two protagonists but they still feel flat and basic. They are almost cliche's, as if they are more the IDEA of teenage girls instead of channeling actual teens. They're annoying and I didn't find myself rooting for them.

The setting had so much potential for a highly atmospheric and chilling read but the writing focused too much on trying to get you in the mind of these poor girls instead of capitalizing on that. The book picked up greatly at the 50% mark, which was too little, too late. There was nothing original about the storyline and I didn't care for the ending.

If this was marketed as a teen thriller instead of, at least from what I saw, an adult horror thriller, then perhaps I wouldn't have had such high expectations. The wording of the synopsis eluded to a more animalistic or even supernatural plotline, but unfortunately this is a thriller that packs all of its thrills in too late. If you are a fan of YA thrillers and like films like the Wrong Turn series this will be right up your alley. If nothing else, I was grateful it was a short read.

Not a big fan of this book. It started out ok, but steadily got more annoying. It's a shame when both main characters are annoying. They're both supposedly smart girls but are a bit dumb especially for their supposed age. I'm tired of reading the same killers slightly rebranded. Grimey backwoods men that like to kill people for fun is so tired. You know what else is tired? Killers that are killing because they had a shitty mom (and including sex work).
The girl wasn't able to get out of the hole with just one foot (and both hands) but could with a little help with only one hand and foot... then proceeded to walk miles of a trail? Only to meet her friend who STILL wasn't out of the woods getting help. And then she drives home? This book kept getting worse and more ridiculous. I was rolling my eyes by the end.
The narrator wasn't my favorite. The southern accents were not so great.
The dialogue wasn't always the best... maybe it was only the accented parts that felt off.
Lastly, creepy? Scary? Nope. Nope.

This was a quick read, a dramatic scary story about being lost in the woods as a teen girl. It was suspenseful and mysterious, but nobody's motivations really made sense. I almost wish this wasn't a YA novel, I think it would have been a better story if it had been darker.

I don’t think the author realizes that traumatic injuries bleed profusely. The majority of the book requires you to suspend disbelief to a very unreasonable point.
challenging dark emotional medium-paced

There came a point in this book where I had to stop and make sure it was a YA book it was getting so graphic and horrific and sure enough it was hahaha I will say the ending made my jaw drop I wasn’t prepared all in all I won’t forget this book anytime soon but it wasn’t my favorite

More effective horror than “There’s Someone Inside Your House” but still on the fence about it.
