This was a good time for me to read this play. I have been learning Irish on Duolingo since the start of the year, and this play felt like adding a little culture and history to my studies. I have a little Irish ancestry, but I don’t know that I really heard any stories passed down from Ireland.

The tragedies in this play feel like they might all have happened with or without the primary trigger, but the main cause definitely caused everything to happen faster and to happen all at once. The money issues would have definitely returned before too long, regardless of any income.

I’m not sure what to think of Jack. He definitely seems to have checked out, but we don’t really get to see how that happened. I feel so bad for Mary. Especially since much of the problem isn’t the same in our culture, now.

I’m planning to read some more of O’Casey’s plays. Probably even soon.

Sean O'Casey's famous play deals with poverty, civil war, and family ties. It kind of reminds me of an Irish version of "a Raisin in the Sun," even though it was written first.

It’s okay to write a novel instead of a play, you know?

I think some of the writing was witty, but I would have never picked it up if I didn't have to read it for my Irish Film and Literature class.
