"It might be symbolic. But what better way to smash the patriarchy than with a lance and sword."
"Indeed. One small step for women, one giant step for Wenches!"
Kit Sweetly works as a 'serving wench' at the Castle, a medieval themed dinner theatre. What she really wants is to be a knight like her brother - but according to company policy, only guys can be knights and they refuse to budge on the subject. Kit is determined to remove the gender restrictions at the castle no matter what and comes up with a plan.
The main storyline was pretty good, which was Kit fighting against the absurd company policies. I loved how supportive her brother was of her throughout the book and how the two of them were always there for each other. I was also very impressed at the diversity in this book and how naturally it's taken, without any kind of fuss.
This could have easily been a story I loved, but there was way too much other stuff going on and so many plot points left unexplored, which detracts from the main story. Kit keeping secrets from her friends should have been a much bigger deal than was shown, since their jobs are essentially on the line. The romance was also hugely unnecessary to the plot, especially since this seemed to be aiming for a strong feminist narrative. I wasn't a huge fan of the writing style either, and it was really hard to connect to the characters.
Overall, while this book did have a wonderful message, it just wasn't as exciting as I thought it would be. It does have a lot of potential though, considering this was a debut, so I will definitely be keeping an eye out for more novels by this author in the future. I would recommend this book for anyone looking for a fast-paced easy YA read.

tw for drug abuse and descriptions of a negligent parent due to drugs.
I thought this book was cute, but didn’t feel satisfied in the amount of actual knight talk there was, and I feel like the LGBT representation was more of a “look! look what i’ve included!!!” rather than flushing them out as people. Layla was the only LGBT rep that I felt got more of a story.
overall, the girl knight moments were sweet.
and I could only picture Jett as Ambrose from Sabrina.

So... I didn't like this but I'm happy a finished it!
The Life and (Medieval) Time of KIt Sweetly is about a girl... named Kit Sweetly. She and her brother work at a medieval themed restaurant / show and she has always dreamed of being one of the knights instead of a serving wench. When Kit takes her brother's place for a show, she goes viral and decides to use her fame to try to allow girls (and everyone else who isn't a cis male) to be knights too. But the rules from corporate are that you have to be a boy to be a knight.
When I heard about this book I thought it would be similar to [b:Well Met|43189874|Well Met (Well Met, #1)|Jen DeLuca|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1548353675l/43189874._SY75_.jpg|67013218] which is a book I really enjoyed. Unfortunately this turned out to be literally Medieval Times (like the actual restaurant) fanfic that wasn't even that cute. The romance was so disappointing too??
I've been to Medieval Times once. It was interesting but I had to eat a greasy piece of turkey with my bare hands and drink lukewarm pepsi in the dark while people screamed so I can't say it was a good experience. The idea of an entire book based around that stinky place, bye.
This entire book is just based around that they don't want women to be knights at their show. The "king" of it, Kit's uncle, is such a cartoon about how he screams that she can't be a knight. Even the random corporate dudes are like nah you can't do that!!! But then of course after seeing Kit and her squad go out and kick ass as knights, the corporate dudes are like nvm keep doing that?? Like it was that easy but they spend the entire book dealing with that?? I appreciate the message of girl power and fighting back against sexism but it was just so lame.
I liked Kit and her brother's dynamic but the rest of the family was just emo and I didn't want any of that. Her father really was the generic deadbeat drug addict father while her mother was extremely overworked and just endlessly worried about her children and money.
The romance was just not developed at all. It had the potential of cute friends to lovers but they just don't go anywhere?? I still don't even understand why they happened because I saw nothing between them.
And oh my GOD the fucking Game of Thrones references would not STOP. I made a joke halfway about how many but then they just kept coming??? Can you not have a medieval restaurant without tons of GOT references like pls. Even when they weren't at the actual place, references still had to be included and I am angry.
Speaking of angry, there is an entire chapter where they are dicking around and acting like total asses at a laundry mat and it was supposed to be cute? Uh no that is annoying and I actually hate teenagers lmao.
Just not a fan but the cover is cute.
