Uses exclusionary and binary language excessively. There is a disclaimer at the beginning of the book saying something like "in this book the term women is meant to include gender minorities and nonbinary individuals", but after that statement at every chance possible, the author goes out of their way to use "he or she" or "him or her" instead of of using the gender-neutral they/them. I understand that the book is meant to empower women, which is great and I fully support that, but there are ways to do that without punching down at the LGBTQIA+ community. The book also has interesting and pretty solid content around neurodivergence, which is extra frustrating, because a high number of people who are neurodivergent are LGBTQIA+ (for autism show it may be as high as 35%), so the author is actively excluding a good portion of their readers. I wanted to like the book, but struggled to connect with the content because each time unnecessary exclusionary language came up I felt like I was being stabbed and was angry and frustrated and couldn't focus on the material for a while. If you are looking for an excellent inclusive author for neurodivergence check out Devon Price's "Unmasking Autism" or "Laziness Does Not Exist", you will find good content and no microaggressions from Devon, he is excellent and talks about uplifting and empowering people and shares stories of his trans experience that help include people instead of dividing people, which is what this book did, it divided and categorized women and what they are and can be, then focused the story on solely supporting them and everybody else needs to leave the clubhouse. I like the intent of the empowerment, but the approach was just so unsettling and cliquish. In any case, read Devon Price, he's great.mj_james_writes's review against another edition
She claimed that racism, homophobia, and transphobia were all taken care of so now people needed to make the same acceptance for ADHD and autism. What a privileged view. What white person has the right to say racism isn’t a concern anymore? And I know first hand homophobia and transphobia are still a major concern. More then having to pass because of my autism. Then she goes on to say that she is just going to use women to refer to all genders because it is a genderless experience. But if it is a genderless experience then why did you specifically search out for research on women? Because it is not! Just own that. Say you are only talking about cis women don’t discount my non-binary identity! There is validity it talking about the cis women experience for neurodivergency and I could have accepted that. But instead you defended yourself by invalidating the large percentage of non-binary and trans autistic and neurodivergent people. And I only made it to page 9!
