I reviewed this book last year, but have listened to the audiobook as it's about to drop off of the Audible Plus catalogue. My thoughts on the story haven't changed; while I don't think it's the best written of the series, overall I think Tristan and Sara are my favourite pair from the Never After world.

However, the narrators were all wrong for the characters in my opinion. The biggest issue for me is that Tristan's narrator has a voice that sounds far too old for the character! When paired with the youthful, saccharine sweet voice of Sara's narrator, this alone detracts greatly from his character. It made it really hard to imagine him as a devastatingly handsome 26 year old dark Prince and kept giving me big age gap, overbearing letch vibes. Sara's voice is probably a bit closer to my expectations, but it felt like it was missing the core of steel that the character has - she almost has the opposite problem of sounding too young. There was also a lot of gasping for breath between sentences, which got on my nerves after a while.

As a whole, it does do a good job at bringing the story to life, and in some respects I think it probably does a better job than the paperback at conveying the build up. But it does also highlight some of the flaws in the writing (I didn't realise the amount of times a character 'tsks' until I listened to this!) which you probably don't notice as prominently when reading a physical copy.

The book states that this is not a retelling, but it is so Lion-King coded that it's difficult to get past that. Dark romance that's Lion King with humans (but somehow not Hamlet).

The sex is great, but takes a while to get there.
The twists!
Most importantly, the love is so, so beautifully written. Honestly, all the emotions are beautifully written.

Emily McIntire strikes again! Forbidden love, strong FMC, and “I’ll burn the world for you” vibes really made this one for me. I enjoyed "Hooked" when I read it last year, but I think I ended up liking this one more! I will say, I think I need to start reading the physical books. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of this as an audiobook. I listened up to about 30% as the audiobook but wasn't getting into the storyline as much. Nothing against the VAs, I just sometimes don't connect the voices well to the characters and it kept taking me out of the story. But when I switched over to my physical copy, I enjoyed it way more!

Also, side note: Emily is such a nice human! I actually recently picked up my copy of "Scarred" because she lives close to me and did a little signed art card drop at a local Target and I was able to snag one! The art that she had done of Scar & Sara B. by the fountain is ✨stunning✨ and I loved having that visual while reading!

After I read Hooked, I didn’t have high expectations for the ending. But boy was I wrong. Just like in Hooked I was invested from the get-go but not only did Scarred have a badass fmc but Tristan was so hot. James felt more edgy, and Tristan felt more realistic like a morally gray man and good lord did I fell in love with him. And yes, after Micheal died, Tristan did rule Gloria Terra, but he did something that I didn’t expect which was giving Simon the crown which just made me tear up. God, I loved this book so much. The ending didn’t feel rushed in actuality it felt perfect however I did feel as if Michael’s death just happened almost like the author wanted to get rid of him. I had hoped that Michael and Tristan would have a talk before he died but that didn’t happen. If it did, I would’ve given this book a 5 star. I also hated reading “milking” during the sex scenes but that’s just a peeve of mine. Other than that, I loved this book.
