"Without the intense and all-excluding love of wife for husband, husband for wife, parents for children, and children for parents, there would be no compassion for people in the larger community." 🤢
This, among other little asides that come directly from the author (ie, not from a specific POV character) lead me to believe that mister koontz is the same kind of conservative christian as my father, and i refuse to subject myself to any more of his bullshit

Nice easy read, with the onion slowly peeling back on a sinister intruder in the woods. I liked this book. It isn't among Koontz's top 10, but it's firmly right there in that second tier of highly readable, entertaining pre-2000 works.

OK, but no better

This really could've been a five-star book. The build-up with Eduardo alone on his ranch was fantastic. Koontz nailed that character and how he faced the increasingly terrifying events surrounding his home. This part is damn good sci-fi horror in the true Lovecraftian tradition.

Unfortunately, we also get hefty doses of Koontz's ongoing Glen Beck-style obsession with the slow collapse of Western civilization thanks to those dang liberals. If you have a problem with cops, it's clearly because you're some kind of nihilist who wants the world to burn, not someone genuinely concerned with social justice and civil rights issues. Guns are the solution, not the problem! We need MOAR GUNS. GIMME MUH GUNS.

*sigh* Look, Dean Koontz is - or was - a great writer. But he's also damned insufferable.

Although at least this book was before he started trying to be "funny" and penning things like "the six-legged crawling thing that might have been a mutant baby born after a worldwide nuclear holocaust as imagined in the waking nightmares of an insect-phobic, fungi-phobic, rat-crazy mescaline junkie" (77 Shadow Street).
