Antara is, in many ways, still a child looking for connection and love that was never given to her as a child. She is offered many chances for connection and yet she constantly pushes those who would love her away. Afraid they will betray her as others have. Now, her mother, is ill with something like Alzheimer's, although no one seems sure; and Antara is forced into caring for a mother who constantly pushed her away and put herself above her daughter. The novel comes full circle when Antara gives birth to a daughter of her own. What kind of mother will Antara be?
