I really appreciate the way several of the characters actually handle stress and trauma. The obvious sometimes evades them and they have such honest, "duh" moments. I've read so many books where people can still function rationally in stressful situations. It is nice to see our brains handle that more realistically. Then there's a super short and sincere chapter. Powell captured my emotions perfectly there.

Even better than the first book, which I liked quite a bit. Sentient ship Trouble Dog continues to grow as a character. And the ship"s engineer Nod from the alien Druff race is one of the best alien characters ever.

This is the second novel in Gareth Powell’s Embers of War series. I loved the first book and was keen to see where the story went next. I read Embers of War many books ago so the details were a little fuzzy in my mind but I thought this book did a good job of re-capping the important points and I quickly felt like I was right back in the story. The crew of the Trouble Dog returns and we are also introduced to some great new characters. I liked the new characters but my favourite is always going to be Nod, I just love them. It was a fantastic sequel, a brilliant adventure packed full of sentient spaceships, aliens and battles! My one criticism? It could have been longer! I just did not want it to end. Cannot wait for the next one.

A lot of not especially logical decisions, but (mostly) made by sentient technology left behind by an ancient alien race, so maybe forgivable.
This is clearly a setup for the next novel, which I will eagerly anticipate.
