3.75

Großes Lob an Michelle Gyo <3

OH MY GOD

i read the first four chapters in september, sat on my ass for almost three months, and then read the rest of the book in one day. zoya remains the most badass woman ever and nina holds me entire heart in the palm of her hand.

I was so, so excited to read this book and it did not disappoint… for the most part. Nikolai, Zoya, and Nina, whose perspectives the story is told from, are all fascinating and enjoyable characters to read about. Nikolai has got to be one of my all time favourite characters. I adored exploring more of his backstory and the struggles he faces throughout his journey. Zoya was someone who I never felt too strongly about in the S&B trilogy, but in this book I absolutely loved her. Discovering more of her story made her so much more powerful in my eyes, and she was a pleasure to read about. And then there’s Nina. As much as I love Nina as a character, her part in this book felt a bit… misplaced. I wasn’t really sure how her storyline fit into the rest of it until, well, I started the next book. However, I can’t deny that she did contribute a few brilliant scenes to King Of Scars.
The scene where she finally buried Matthias was more heartbreaking than anything the Grishaverse has produced so far, and I actually got choked up. That’s saying something since I never even liked Matthias…
Anyways, this book is definitely worth the read if you love the Grishaverse as much as I do!

I wasn’t expecting neither Zoya Nazyalensky nor Nina Zenik to be in this book. I’m so glad Bardugo chose to include them. Nikolai is a very loveable character, but it’s really these two who shine in this first book. Nina’s thorny dealings with grief and desire to hold space and mercy for Fjerdans is spectacularly and sadly woven. She grows more apart from the Ravka crew while bringing the Crows fondly to memory. Zoya has always been a one-note character in the trilogy, and this book shows that Alina’s perception was very much one-sided. Her history is rich, especially considered against
Lizabeta’s. Another woman who was denied power early on but used it to save her city. It’s understandable (reading the book of saints) why she turned on the rest of the saints. She hasn’t had respect or power yet, something she shares with The Darkling. Zoya is someone who could easily fall into that same pattern, even more so than the demon-plagued Nikolai. Their romance surprised me, but the way it is done is very honest. I love that Nina and Zoya both get to retain their grit in this book. It makes them more interesting as female characters, something that doesn’t always happen in fiction.
. This book is such a change from the Crows, but it deepens the original world from the trilogy with the same narrative complexity as the previous duology. One might be tempted to skip this duology thinking they know the grishaverse too well already. That would be a mistake. The continuation, grief, and mess after the trilogy’s happy ending is what makes this book shine.

The new King of Ravka is not what he seems.

"The monster is me and I am the monster."

After the Darkling's defeat, Nikolai ushers in a new era of peace and ingenuity. But he and his most trusted allies are harboring a dark secret from the masses: Nikolai has not completely recovered from the Darkling's curse, and the monster inside him constantly battles him for control. Meanwhile Nina works undercover in enemy territory, carrying precious cargo. Something dark calls to her, persistent enough to convince her not to give in to the sorrow that threatens to consume her.

King of Scars is the first of the newest series in the Grishaverse. This was a highly anticipated read, as the main character, Nikolai, is one of my all-time favorite characters. Even so, it was a bit of a slow start for me, and I actually ended up putting it down for a while before coming back to it, but I'm so glad I did!

As always, I adore Bardugo's writing style, but the plot and character development in this book were the best I've seen thus far. Her characters are so easy to get attached to. The magic in this series is on another level compared to the other Grishaverse books! I was pulled in to the story once it got going. It had me alternatively laughing and fighting tears, such was the emotional journey.

The hardest part for me was seeing Nikolai not always acting like the character I knew and loved from the other books. Since he is a main character, we get much more from him than just his witty charm, and reading about his inner turmoil was a little different than what I expected. Also, some of the content may be disturbing to younger readers, so I would highly recommend checking out the trigger warnings before reading.

Overall, I gave it 4.5 / 5 stars! This is by far my favorite book in the Grishaverse series so far and I am excited to get my hands on the next book, Rule of Wolves
