The cruelty of childhood, the confusion of adulthood and the joy of finding comfort in small acts of kindness. Hugely satisfying family drama spread over serval decades full of secrets and a couple of neat surprises.

I have enjoyed other books by Harriet Evans but this one didn't really appeal to me. I almost stopped reading it as it was so depressing but it did improve as I kept reading. None of the characters were sympathetic and the story was a bit grim.

Other reviewers obviously disagree so I'm in a minority on this one.

I found it a struggle to finish this book. I didn’t find the storyline very exciting and there are no loveable characters to draw you in.

I just couldn't take it anymore, the circular narrative with always the same problems being presented and the protagonist making the same non-decisions. I also began to hate
her partner
even though I felt the narratornwas trying hard to make him come across well.
