It was pretty interesting and showcased a lot of the things that were happening at the time. Very happy with how the author portrayed mental disorders for the time period. The writing was pretty good and it was a quick read. Unexpected ending but I loved the friendship that the characters had.

Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don't belong no place. They come to a ranch an' work up a stake, and the first thing you know they're poundin' their tail on some other ranch. They ain't got nothing to look ahead to.

Tears.

They come, an' they quit an' go on; an' every damn one of 'em's got a little piece of land in his head. An' never a God damn one of 'em ever gets it. Just like heaven. Ever'body wants a little piece of lan'. I read plenty of books out here. Nobody never gets to heaven, and nobody gets no land. It’s just in their head.

All of the tears.

Maybe ever’body in the whole damn world is scared of each other.

Niagara Falls worth of tears.

This novel is absolutely brilliant and everyone should read it. But be warned, it will emotionally destroy you.

Try to understand men, if you understand each other you will be kind to each other. Knowing a man well never leads to hate and nearly always leads to love.

Another book in the genre of “thinly veiled autobiography.” I genuinely think this may be one of my least favorite books of all time. The entire book is conversations between people and then conversations discussing or relaying those conversations to other people. It’s so incredibly repetitive, I could’ve zoned out at any point and caught up easily. I’m so confused how this book managed to stay the test of time and still be considered relevant and important today.
