Red, White, and Whole is a story told in verse. Reha is a young Indian American girl living in Kentucky, a place not known for diversity in the 1980’s. She feels divided because she spends weekends at her Indian temple and socializing with found family, since her parents left everyone back in India. During the week though she is American, spending time with her American friends. Life is confusing when you feel split between two cultures, but Reha has a loving and supportive family. This is a beautiful story, written so beautifully.

This is a book that made me tear up. It is about an Indian American girl in the 80s who is trying to navigate life between two cultures--her parents and their expectations and her friends and surroundings. She wants to become a doctor, but the one issue is that she cannot stand the sight of blood. Her mom is diagnosed with leukemia and has to go through treatments which don't work the way they are supposed to. This is an emotional book--it is short (209 pages) but it packs a punch. Definitely recommend for all kids 6th and up.

This book should be in every middle school library! I adored how this book is written in verse and the Indian American representation is beautiful. I read this in one sitting.
