Happy to say this one lived up to the hype!
Such beautiful writing and my heart broke a million times over for Kya who overcame adversity with such grace. I was so invested in this memorable cast of characters. Quite sad to be leaving them behind.
Almost too scared to watch the film now. Please don’t ruin it 🙏

I went into this novel open-minded, really wanting to understand the hype.

There's two books in one - the love declaration to the marsh, its ecosystem and the creatures within in, which is entirely worth the read.
And the mystery novel which is awkward, bumbling and a bit overdone (they spend the whole defense showing her as incapable of doing a james bond mission but in the end, surprise that's actually totally what happened because of... marsh powers ??? I guess ???).

I was disappointed by the ending and the surprise twist which didn't feel necessary.
Overall very unequal but poetic and mesmerizing nonetheless.

Found it slow to start but as I neared the end I couldn't put it down. Very tragic and lonely but there are glimpses of joy that shine through. Felt very real, not really a murder mystery, more like an interesting biography.

Kya is a STRONG human being with and incredible talent and accompanying intelligence. This is a beautiful love letter to nature (both wild and human).

Destroy the evidence.

Check the content warnings… I actually  nearly made it to the end but it really brought me down. Shame because it had so much potential, if only it hadn’t been so dark. This is not a book of hope, not to me. It just shows all negative aspects of humanity, not really what I needed in this time :(

What holds this back for me is that I struggled with the small-town ignorance of some of the characters during the investigation of who killed Chase Andrews. Regardless of how it ultimately ends, the fact that there were so many holes and overlooked points made it feel like a less comedic "My Cousin Vinny" at some points.

This starts veeeeeerrryyyy slowly and really doesn’t get going until the last third. I enjoyed the ecological details and character development to a point - it was overly detailed. I felt the stereotypes were lazy: prejudice against Kya, Jumpin’ and his wife, the sheriff, the jock, the white villagers, etc. I also found it predictable. I’m surprised it was so popular.
