I sat on this for 24 hours before writing the review. I don't have a lot of triggers, I can process things like a healthy adult, however this did bring up a lot of stuff. So to write a fair review I had to give my head some space.

Growing up with Kya was a beautiful and sad journey all at the same time. She was so strong and overcame everything thrown at her but you couldn't help but think that she shouldn't have those things thrown at her to begin with.

Honestly the ending wrecked me. Because while I fully expected it, I didn't want to believe it.
I wanted to hold on to Kyas innocence.

This book will take you on an emotional roller coaster. If you can handle the content, I strongly recommend this read.

Listened to the audio bc I was scared reading it, but it's okay. I was spoiled by reading the reviews (my bad) but still liked it enough to finish it.

A nice cross between a murder mystery and a coming of age story. The flashbacks/flashforwards were really well done (not confusing at all!) and the depictions of marsh natural life were excellent. Kya’s actions and motives were fascinating. The only reason I’m not giving a full five stars was because I didn’t love the ending. Some (very minor) sexual and violent content. 4.5 stars

Where the Crawdads Sing is a book about Kya a young girl who lives on a marsh in North Carolina. It follows a dual timeline switching between Kya growing up as she is left by her whole family. She ends up growing up alone in the marshes, she doesn't go to school and she only speaks to like 4 people. when a beloved member of the town is found dead Kya finds herself suspect number 1.
My favourite character is Kya, because of her family history and the adversity she faces because of the townspeople I truly felt bad for her and I hoped she'd get somewhat of a happy ending. My favourite part of the book is the way the author described the marshes and how central the theme of nature was to the story as a whole.
The book ends with a sort of plot twist that I found unbelievable. I like the main character however I was left with many questions about her and her upbringing. How did all of her family abandon the youngest child and no one came back for her for all those years even though they all knew that they had left her with an abusive alcoholic father? how does Kya learn to speak proper English even though the only people she talks to have heavy Southern accents? In addition, the story is quite slow and whilst Kya is written well and is very fleshed out in the book, most of the secondary characters are not.
I would recommend this book to readers who appreciate immersive storytelling, atmospheric settings, and character-driven narratives. However, potential readers should be open to a slower-paced narrative and be willing to suspend some disbelief regarding certain plot developments.

I could not put it down! This book had me hooked from beginning to end. First time I’ve read a book in a 24 hour period in a long time!
