Growing up with Kya was a beautiful and sad journey all at the same time. She was so strong and overcame everything thrown at her but you couldn't help but think that she shouldn't have those things thrown at her to begin with.
Honestly the ending wrecked me. Because while I fully expected it, I didn't want to believe it.
This book will take you on an emotional roller coaster. If you can handle the content, I strongly recommend this read.

My favourite character is Kya, because of her family history and the adversity she faces because of the townspeople I truly felt bad for her and I hoped she'd get somewhat of a happy ending. My favourite part of the book is the way the author described the marshes and how central the theme of nature was to the story as a whole.
The book ends with a sort of plot twist that I found unbelievable. I like the main character however I was left with many questions about her and her upbringing. How did all of her family abandon the youngest child and no one came back for her for all those years even though they all knew that they had left her with an abusive alcoholic father? how does Kya learn to speak proper English even though the only people she talks to have heavy Southern accents? In addition, the story is quite slow and whilst Kya is written well and is very fleshed out in the book, most of the secondary characters are not.
I would recommend this book to readers who appreciate immersive storytelling, atmospheric settings, and character-driven narratives. However, potential readers should be open to a slower-paced narrative and be willing to suspend some disbelief regarding certain plot developments.
