I love when I find the perfect word to embody just how I feel and what I want to say and I have:

Trite. This book is trite.

I didn’t know this book was so popular until I was halfway through reading and couldn’t put it down. I enjoyed the characters, the way the mystery unraveled, and am always happy to suspend disbelief from time to time for the sake of a good story. A perfect summer read. 4.5 stars.

Excellent book!

You can’t help but fall in love with Kya in this story. I love the use of nature and poems woven throughout the story. Her struggles with acceptance and abandonment and all without that strong family bond. I find it interesting that hers mother’s love stayed with her and made her strong even though she abandoned her.

12/24: i recently tried to reread this book and i can’t get past the fact that tate and kya are 14-18 respectively and also the use of the n-word as a white author sits weird with me. i know it’s because of the times but as a black woman i don’t have to accept it in this book

3/24: i really enjoyed this story and i really loved Kya as a character. I just feel like the ending/last few chapters were rushed together imo

I'm late to the party reading this book. I was concerned that all the wonderful reviews might ruin it for me and that it may not live up to the hype. I do not want to give anything away so I will just say that it is a very moving novel and well worth your time.

2.5 stars. I enjoyed the nature writing of this book but the rest was bleh. The plot was simplistic and just didn’t do it for me. I need to stop reading best sellers because it seems I hardly ever enjoy them.

I enjoyed this book for the most part. I kept waiting for something more exciting to happen and it never really did. Found myself skimming some sections, and honestly it was a bit predictable. Was trying to get to the end as fast as possible so I could move to the next book. I’d say overall it was a decent read and I’m happy I did but it’s nothing to rave about.
