Fine I guess, but disappointing. First, nothing really happens in this book. Like one of those middle of the series WoT books, except 600 pages shorter. The entire plot is yet another tournament, which even the characters in the book seem disappointed by. I guess when in doubt, just Hunger Games your way to a plot. And the complete lack of any sort of economic or political complexity is also very Hunger Games. All the main characters are super important people theoretically ruling countries, but there is no sense of espionage or even really politics. All the characters are straight-forward good or bad and it is all telegraphed from miles away. You keep waiting for some second-level of complexity and nope, never there.
Spoiler Take brother Shaan. What is the point of this dude? For awhile it seemed like maybe he was actually working at cross-purposes with our main characters. The trusted advisor who actually has his own scheme. And then he just dies on a boat. So I guess, nope, nothing interesting going on with him at all? Just some boring dude who didn't actually contribute something to the story. sigh

Well. That's the end of that.

Look, the first book wasn't perfect, but I thought it had potential. This book just straight up ran it into the ground.

After everything that happened, Kali continuing to allow herself to be manipulated by ruling men is intolerable to me. Let's be clear about one thing: ALL the men with any kind of power in the world of this series are fucking awful. And by fucking awful, what I mean is: Kali should scorch them all and built a new world on their ashes. She's a powerful woman who allows herself to constantly be a pawn. A pawn to the rajah (evil fuck), the rajah's son (brainless, spineless fuck), Deven (emo fuck), Brother Shaan (manipulative fuck) and all the rulers (sultan and vizier) in the shitty new kingdom we're in for most of this book. I just can't take it anymore. There's no progress, just contrived circular bullshittery.

It gets two stars instead of one because I feel like the mythology it weaves is interesting. But not interesting enough to stick with characters that I would like to drop kick into a volcano. So this is where the series and I part ways.

My Review: First off you really do need to read book one of this before this one. However if you decide to jump into this one without reading book one. I think the author did a wonderful job giving us an update on what happened in book one. She didn't over do it and did it just enough to remind you of the key points of what happened in the first title.

This story was very well done. I do think that there is one part of this where Kalinda is in a cave and there's something else down there with her. I really hope that we find out what it was. I really thought that maybe it was a dragon that was going to come out of hiding and jump in and save her but that never happened. So much stuff happens in this story and the flow of it was so good. I was up until 2am to finish it and the it left me on a slight cliffhanger and I really wanted to start the next book but of course I fell asleep before that happened.

I really loved how Kalinda was torn between keeping her throne and doing what she wanted. It felt very real and genuine with how she felt and how she was dealing with the aftermath of book one. This is one of those stories where you will be flipping the pages faster and faster.

I asked Emily R. King last night about Kalinda and how in the world she embodied the Dragon Queen from Game of Thrones and she told me she doesn't watch it at all. So that was a big shocker. Because fans of the Danny will totally fall in love with Kalinda in this title. She is fierce as all get out and OMG I love her so much!!
I really did enjoy having Deven's POV in this one however parts of it early on just kind of rubbed me the wrong way. I know that Deven had it in his head that he was disgraced but how could he loose faith in Kali so fast? On the other hand I know how it feels to doubt yourself and in this stance he was doing that more than really losing faith with Kali. But I really wished that would have come out on the page. I feel so sorry for Deven in this story to start out with.

Duty and Love war in this second installment of The Hundredth Queen series set in a vivid world you are sure to fall for this thrilling adventure! ~CrossroadReviews

I was not prepared for the thrills and excitement of this sequel. The story was packed with surprises, adventure, drama, and more! I loved the dual perspectives, new characters, trials, and the mind-blowing final battle.

Seeing Kalinda and Deven apart strengthened their relationship to me. It was great to see them work through their challenges without relying on each other. I found them both to be quiet strong, particularly Deven, since he didn't have as much development in the previous book.

Ashwin was also an interesting character, since for most of the book, I didn't quite know if his motives were pure or not. The villains were even more intense and terrifying than ever before. I am truly becoming attached to some of the side characters and will bite my nails to make sure they survive!

The new lore, combined with King's stunning writing style made for a truly inescapable experience. I am head over heels for this series, and need to keep going to find out what happens next! This is a definite recommend for anyone looking for an action filled fantasy with a powerful female lead!

Decent but not as good as the first one. Deven was a dumbass basically the whole book and Kali just let him be dumb. Ashton was interesting and I really liked Natesa in this one! Excited to see where the next one takes because the ending of this one was 🔥

I though that this book was pretty good. I liked all the characters and found the story to be entertaining, despite being a little predictable.

I loved everything about this book!

Okay, so at the beginning I was so into Kalinda and Ashwin.. BUT THAT ENDING GUYS!
OH.
MY.
FREAKING.
GOD.
GUYS!

Yeah, I was messed up because then Kalinda and freaking Deven were on FIRE. God I love those two. Well, actually I loved everyone in this book.

The Fire Queen is a dual POV from Kalinda and Deven. Kalinda is finally out of her terrible marriage with her horrible ex freaking husband. God, I hated that douche in the first book. She then runs to the crown prince with her friends. Like I said I did end up liking her and Ashwin but I can totally see them as friends. Although it did break my heart that he found out in a terrible way that she wasn't into him. Sorry not sorry?

Other than the romance and rooting for couples within this book, there's this competition. Kalinda makes some friends and some enemies. At first I didn't like one of the girls because she was a bitch and locked her up at one point of the book. Then there's the whole fighting competition which was awesome and scary at the same time. I screamed at one point and then wanted to cry.

Yeah, I was basically a hot mess towards the end of this book. Okay, for the whole book.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It was pretty good for it being the second book of this series. I seriously can't wait to read the third book and I'm so happy it's sitting so pretty on my kindle waiting for me to dive into it.

I'M SO FREAKING EXCITED GUYS!

Thanks to Netgalley and Skyscape for giving me this book to review.

The Fire Queen is the light, fast paced sequel to The Hundredth Queen which improved on the world building and descriptive writing. However, I found the story very predictable as it was so similar to the first book. I also was not a fan of the love triangle in this book, and while I liked the alternating POVs in this book as we got to see more story, it did make me like Deven less.

Kali is a good character as she knows what she wants now and is very loyal to her country and the people in it. I wish Deven would grow a pair as in the entire book he was moping around, pushing people away, and then was upset that they weren’t around. I found Ashwin’s character a bit inconsistent but also naïve and a pushover. Brother Shaan’s character changed completely in this book as he seemed a bit shady.

While this book is not perfect I still enjoyed it, and am looking forward to reading The Rogue Queen. I would recommend The Fire Queen to fans of the first book The Hundredth Queen.
