I'll give three and a half stars for the novel and another half a star for the excellent narration by Yahtzee Croshaw himself in the audiobook version.

A nice parody of MMO games and I loved most of the characters. Especially with names like Slippery John and Mr. Wonderful.

Apparently I read this book in 4 year intervals, if goodreads it to be believed. Having just finished the third reread, I'm giving this book an extra star. It resonated more with me this time round and it was like coming back to an old friend who you'd forgotten could be this funny. It has a few pacing flaws, especially towards the end, and some things happen a little too conveniently -
Spoiler actually so conveniently that even the main character remarks on it, leaving us readers to wonder if a there's more to a certain character
. But none of that stands much in the way of a very enjoyable read and what I still consider the most smashing debut book in years.

This is not my typical kind of book at all-- I never would have picked this up on my own and only read it on the recommendation of someone I know. I really liked the idea of this book-- a not-quite-killed NPC in an MMORPG tries to find a way to truly and properly put himself out of his half-dead misery-- but having played very few video games, I don't think I enjoyed this book nearly as much nor got as many of the jokes as an actual gamer would have. I'm quite certain there was a lot that went over my head simply because I'm not sure if I've ever played an MMORPG. The plot is straightforward enough but I never quite got into it, nor did I feel that the characters were all that interesting or well-developed. Much of the dialogue felt really flat or were just set-ups for jokes that I didn't find funny. I'm not sure if this is because I'm just not into games and didn't get the joke or if the book simply isn't that well-written to begin with (I suspect the latter). In any case, I had difficulty enjoying this one and so it gets a low rating from me. Maybe avid gamers will eat this up.

Read this years ago and I'm sure it would have been way more enjoyable at the time. It has not aged particularly well. It is still a good story with lots of twists and turns but some word choice does pull you out of it.
