Despite the interesting plot, it was impossible for me to enjoy this book. The footnotes are supposed to be funny and witty, but they make me lose my focus and therefore I just felt annoyed every time I saw a new footnote. None of the characters are likeable, so I felt no emotion whenever their lives took a turn for the worse. In addition, the story contains few positive and happy moments, so overall this book just feels emotionally dead to me.

What a fun read! I'm looking forward to reading the other books in the Trilogy.

Arghh, I had so many hopes and expectations. Barimaeus reallyy had so much potential to be funnyy. But this failed for me on almost all counts, it's magic system was neither wondrous enough, nor logical enough for me to appreciate, the human protagonist was extremely boring, and Bartimaeus wasn't half as funny as he thought of himself. Even the story doesn't really generate any interest and is podded along by the stupidest of events. For example there is this time when the boy Nathaniel 'outmaneuvers' Bartimaeus by using a spell that promises indefinite confinement in a bad place for the djinn in case any harm comes to Bartimaeus! Like come on, in this long history of magic, this is the first time someone thought of this, if magicians can use threats like this then Djinns have nothing else to do than be obedient house elves throughout their lives! Regardless, I don't think I would have minded reading this 10-12 years ago, but this has ust too many flaws for me to like now

Wonderful!! A darker, funnier Harry Potter ... highly recommend!
