The Bartimaeus Trilogy is the one of best fantasy books I’ve ever read and, so far, one of my favorite books of all time.
The best thing about this trilogy is that the main characters aren’t the classic heroes you get to see in the majority of YA novels: the protagonists? A skinny, arrogant, selfishly proud 12 years old who grows up to be one the most powerful wizards in the government at the age of 18; an ancient, snarky, sassy, disrespectful, spirit with a really big ego, but that deep down has a big heart; a young girl who is part of the “Rebels” and who is also brave, determined and the first in over 500 years to actually try to understand spirits instead of seeing them as slaves.
The story is wonderfully developed, the character Arcs are believable and reliable, and the ending is bittersweet, but also very realistic: I have very strange preferences when it comes to fantasy books (I hated Harry Potter, for example), but this Trilogy has everything a good book needs to have.
Just, be sure not to pick it up looking for a world of brave heroes, selfless motives and pure feelings because you’ll get none of this until the end.

Part of it is probably due to my nostalgia-rose-tinted glasses, but this was just as much of a fun read as it was when I first read it in middle school. Highly recommend it for a good time.
i guess this is just a "me" problem but I could identify with any of the characters

A fun, fast paced and funny middle grade/YA series about a boy magician, a rascal genie and a corrupt government obsessed with holding onto power.
I've been going back through a lot of popular old YA books to separate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak, so that I can build up a collection of YA recommendations for kids and teenagers that I know. I want them to read age-appropriate books that are also good in quality. This book series definitely makes the list.

Fun read. Loved Bartimaeus, not so much Nathaniel - maybe it’s because I’m reading this for the first time as an adult, but I found him to be a brat. Still enjoyed the story and the world building.
quippy funny the entire series is a 4 its childrens books but i enjoy as an adult
