this had so much potential and is exactly the kind of thing i enjoy: lesbians and the sea and weird, folklore stuff. and i did enjoy it! the details of the settings were really vivid here, but i didn't feel connected to the characters, and i wished the plot had been a little more filled out. something just felt missing here! it read a little like young adult to me, and maybe i would have enjoyed it more in that context?? still a good, quick read!

a slow, atmospheric, and tender retelling. i had not read the selkie wife before this and found i didnt need to in order to enjoy the story. this also does a great job of staying historically accurate and still allowing queer characters to have their happy endings
