the story's actually quite enjoyable, adventurous yet reflective, and i esp like the cool grandmas and family, in addition to the great disability and queer rep. however, some of it seems a lil too on-the-surface, like the issue of nova's identity. the dialogue's also often awkward and unnatural. im a lil perplexed at how the title barely has any significance in the story, except a scene where the object itself isnt even drawn out on the pg...
the art, meanwhile, falls flat for me: the characters seem to have no fluidity even mid-action, sometimes distracting me from the book by how wooden they seem. although the line art's uniquely and meticulously detailed, instead of enhancing the pg, it actually declutters things quite a bit. the lack of sound effects also makes things confusing at points. additionally, i find the paneling ineffective; things and actions that should be shown arent, and vice versa. it would've benefited from more close ups and varied angles that add further depth as well - currently there are too many half- and full-body shots even though they arent necessary at all, and even hinder the story at times.
this is by no means a bad book, but imo it cant be denied that - despite its rep and potential - it could be better, esp in terms of art and dialogue.

I love the little details of what it's like having a hearing aid (I assume that's realistic - e.g answering the phone)
I love that everyone immediately switches to "They" as soon as they are told the first time.
A great magical story, with LGBTQIA representation.

Mooncakes follows a witch and a nonbinary werewolf who used to be childhood best friends and they meet again when Tam comes to track down a demon. Together, the two will have to figure out Tam's werewolf magic and stop the demon before it can hurt anyone.
I love Nova and Tam so much. They're both so precious. This story is precious. I need it to be a series. I loved every single second of this graphic novel and I want more of everything in it. Queer nonbinary werewolf? Yes! Queer sapphics witches? Yes! magic and mayhem? Extra YES! I wish I read this sooner.
Rep: Jewish Sapphic female MC who uses hearing aids, queer nonbinary BIPOC love interest, WLW side couple.

This is the magical, cute and just plain adorable graphic novel I have been waiting for! I had a constant smile on my face the whole time i was reading and was very sad when the book came to a close. I wanted more cute and was sad to see it end.
A young witch follows a white wolf into the woods one night, what she didnt see coming was to get attacked by some scary house demon and to run into her childhood crush she hasn't seen in years. Follow them as they reconnect and discover the threat of a cult who wants to use werewolves and their magic to change the world in their awful image.
The characters, Nova who is a Chinese American with magical gifts and also hearing impaired and Tam, a Non Binary werewolf are the most sweetest characters I have ever seen. I love them both separately and love them even more together. Nova is still struggling with the loss of her parents and is currently living with her two grandmothers( who are amazing by the way!) and Tam who has ran away from home after being mistreated by their parents. I love how they supported each other and loved each other so unconditionally. You could feel their love for each other come right off the pages and it was adorable.
This novel had such good representation of found family, finding your own place in the world and being comfortable there and loving and accepting who you are. The writing and the illustrations were so beautiful and I can not wait to see what Suzanne and Wendy do next.
If you want a cute magical adventure with equally cute magical characters then go and get Mooncakes, you won't regret it. Get some actually Mooncakes while you at it too it would be the perfect compliment to such a good graphic novel!

This is a wonderful little comic with adorable art. There were fun, light hearted moments in between the family drama and fighting evil magic. It is well written with elements of found family, a cute romance and queer, trans and sapphic rep.
I highly recommend this to anyone who wants a witchy queer book. I especially recommend this to older fans of The Witch Boy by Molly Ostertag.
Moderate: Animal cruelty, Body horror, Confinement, Death of parent, and Kidnapping
