”Home is where you are, okay?”
 - Mooncakes

Tropes: Paranormal Romance, Friends to Lovers
Representation: LGBT (Nonbinary/Trans), Disability (Hearing Loss)
CW: Kidnapping, Confinement, Violence, Death of a Parent

I don’t read a lot of fantasy graphic novels, but after Mooncakes, I will definitely be reading more. The diversity representation is done really well and woven throughout, so it doesn’t feel forced. The illustrations were beautiful and warm, giving the book an overall cozy feel that I loved—especially since a lot of the fantasy I ready leaves me with the opposite of cozy feelings. Overall, his was a short and sweet story with great world-building and an adorable side romance.

This was really cute! I'll read anything if it's queer and this was in no way disappointing in that regard. This was a lovely little adventure that got a bit darker than I thought it would, but not in a bad way. I'd definitely recommend this!

The plot of Mooncakes follows two main protagonists: a young witch called Nova who lives with her grandmothers (who I strongly believe are a couple) Qiuli and Nechama and her childhood crush who recently comes back into the area, werewolf Tam. There’s a fantasy/magical storyline whereby they must defeat the dark forces trying to claim wolf magic for evil but the romance rekindling was what I truly adored. The Queerness was so beautiful and amazing, I’m so happy younger people have things like this to showcase representation and to know that being a certain way is totally normal. Tam uses They/Them pronouns and there’s a part where they tell Qiuli this and she immediately apologised and they’re not misgendered at all again, even the baddie (I won’t say who) uses the correct pronouns! Nova is hard of hearing and uses hearing aids, her struggle with them is discussed but I just loved the inclusion of a deaf character that I have yet to read and to see her thriving too was great. Another character I loved with Nova’s friend Tatyana who was great and (I don’t want to sound mean here and this is something I love about the book and to be honest it shouldn’t be considered a bad thing anyways) drawn as bigger than the ‘average’ person further adding to the inclusivity in this graphic novel. The artwork is also beautiful throughout with rich colours, perfectly identifiable characters, it’s engaging and as a whole very pleasant to look at and explore.

Overall I really enjoyed this book and would totally recommend it. A queer witch and werewolf fantasy romance… how can you possibly pass that up? I cannot wait to read more by the co-authors and will certainly be doing so.
